FALL FESTIVALS
Sept 23rd & 24th – Asheville Greek Festival at Holy Trinity Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. The greater Asheville community is invited to explore the sights and sounds of Greece. This year, like 2020 and 2021, they won’t be hosting their festival in their past usual style, but still want to share the food you love (they’ll be back to a full in-person festival for 2023!). Many of their Greek specialties and pastries will be available but the menu is limited! Enjoy the convenience of ordering their delicious food without leaving your car at the Yiassou Drive Thru! Sept 24th 10:00am-5:00pm – National Public Lands Day at Cradle of Forestry and other public lands across the country. National Public Lands Day (NPLD) is the nation’s largest single-day volunteer event for public lands. NPLD is also a “Fee-Free Day”—one of only five days a year when entrance fees are waived at national parks and other public lands. Because of this everyone can enjoy the Cradle of Forestry for FREE this day! “Come explore our exhibit hall, film, café, giftshop and over 3 miles of paved hiking trails and seven historical buildings from the time of the first forestry school in America, the Biltmore Forest School.” EVENT LINK HERE
Sept 24th 10:00am – 2022 Dupont Forest Festival at Guion Farm Oarking Area in Hendersonville. On National Public Lands Day Friends of DuPont Forest will host the 4th annual DuPont Forest Festival, an event celebrating the adventure, wilderness and beauty of DuPont State Recreational Forest. Sept 24th 10:00am-5:00pm – Mountain Heritage Day at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee. An annual festival celebrating our rich southern Appalachian heritage and culture nestled in the mountains of western North Carolina on the campus of Western Carolina University. EVENT LINK HERE
Sept 24th 11:00am-7:00pm – Blue Ridge Pride Festival in Pack Square Park. To celebrate and uphold Western North Carolina’s incredible LGBTQ+ community. With dozens of exhibitors, vendros, partners, entertainers, it’s sure to be a good time. Sept 24th 2:00pm-6:00pm – Fall Festival at Triangle Park in Asheville with Just Folks Organization. Vendors, Food Vendors, Food truck, Car Show, Live Music.
Sept 24th 3:00pm – NOLA Brass Fest at Salvage Station in Asheville. The newest way to experience New Orleans music, heritage, and culture. Featuring performances from Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Joint Killer Brass Band, Da Truth Brass Band, Funk N Around With Garfield, and Big Chief Romeo (from The 9th Ward Hunters), this one-day event will also include second-line parades, a cultural exchange, New Orleans cuisine, arts and crafts, and good ole New Orleans fun! Sept 24th 4:30pm-7:30pm – WNC Family Fall Festival at Youngblood Farm. A Hands On! Reunion presented by Turf Mountain Sod. All proceeds from this event beneifit Hands On! Sept 25th 12:00pm-5:00pm – 2022 Carolina Mountain Cheese Festival at Oak & Grist Distilling Company in Black Mountain. An annual event and fundraiser that benefits the WNC Cheese Trail, a non-profit whose goal is to spread the word about the amazing artisan cheeses being made in Western North Carolina. Oct 1st 11:00am-7:00pm – Fiesta Hendersonville in Downtown Hendersonville with Hola Carolina. Downtown Hendersonville comes alive with the sights, sounds, music, pageantry, colorful costumes and extraordinary talent of Latin America. Fiesta Hendersonville features something for everyone, patrons can journey through over 20 represented countries and experience their people, music, art, food and culture. Feast on Latin American delicacies, such as pupusas from El Salvador; empanadas from Argentina; and chicharrones, esquites, and elotes from Mexico. Oct 8th 9:00am-4:00pm – Mountain Glory Festival in Downtown Marion. Celebrate small-town life in the mountains. Visitors looking for original handicrafts will find plenty of choices shopping with three jam packed blocks, featuring over 150 craft, food, non-profit and sponsor booths of locally made arts and crafts; festival foods and pubs with local wines, mead and beers. Oct 8th 10:00am-4:00pm – Bascom Lamar Lunsford Mountain Music Festival at Mars Hill University. The event is the second-oldest folk festival in Western North Carolina and was named after Bascom Lamar Lunsford, a musician and folklorist who dedicated his life to collecting and promoting the music of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. The festival, which is in its 55th year, brings out the region’s finest musicians, dancers, and ballad singers for a day of fall fun celebrating the rich cultural traditions of Southern Appalachia. The Madison Heritage Arts Festival occurs on the same day as the Lunsford Festival, so there will be lots of local arts to explore, as well as music. Free and open to the public and all are welcome. Oct 8th 1:00pm-4:00pm – CiderFest NC 2022 at Olivette Riverside Community & Farm in Asheville. Featuring ample tastings of hard cider, mead and apple wine, along with artisanal food, live music, workshops, a kids zone, and more along the scenic French Broad River. EVENT LINK HERE
Oct 9th 12:00pm-8:00pm – Lovely Asheville Fall Festival in Pack Square Park in Downtown Asheville. Designed to promote Loving Nature, Loving Humanity, and Loving Art. The festival offers family-friendly fun, food, entertainment, cultural activities, merchants, and speakers. Local Bands will perform R&B, pop, rock, jazz, Afro beats, reggae, and other genres. Small businesses will offer locally created foods, fashion designs, arts and crafts. Featured bands include well-known WestSound, headliner The Hypnotic Band, and featuring the youth group (ages 7-11) The Lights Band from the LEAF arts and music program. Also performing is the popular local cover ensemble The Free Flow Band, and the all-female WTF Band.

Oct 15th 10:00am-2:00pm – The Learning Garden presents: OctoberFest: Family Fun in the Garden! at the NC Cooperative Extension Buncombe County Center 49 Mount Carmel Road Asheville, NC 28806. Oct 15th 10:00am-5:00pm – Apple Harvest Festival in Downtown Waynesville. The streets of downtown Waynesville, NC are filled with almost 200 arts and craft booths, food concessions, music, cloggers, and more. Local apple growers set up on the street to sell delicious mountain grown apples of a vast variety. In addition, many vendors offer apple cider, cake, pies, and other delectable apple goodies! Oct 15th 12:00pm-6:00pm – Burton Street Ag Fest at Burton Street Community Peace Garden and Market with Hood Huggers International. Music, food, games & fun for the entire family. This free event is a revitalization of a festival founded by E.W. Pearson in 1913. Known then as the Buncombe County and District Colored Agricultural Fair, at its peak the event drew thousands of attendees and helped the historically Black neighborhood to be self sufficient. Oct 16th 11:00am-6:00pm – Asheville Vegan Festival in Pack Square Park. Food, clothing, and artisan booths showing the best there is on the vegan market. There will be education on the stage, a DJ in the family fun zone, and live music performing in the back section. EVENT LINK HERE
Oct 22nd 11:00am-3:00pm – Touch-a-Truck Family Festival at Asheville Outlets with Junior League of Asheville, TOUCH-A-TRUCK is a community wide event where both kids and kids at heart have the opportunity to see, touch, climb and learn about vehicles of all types, including public service, emergency, utility, construction, transportation, and delivery—all in one place! Guests will get to meet the drivers and people who operate these vehicles. Children will also be able to “truck or treat” through the festival, and family-friendly costumes are encouraged but not required. EVENT LINK HERE

Oct 22nd 3:00pm-7:00pm – Falloween at Lake Julian Park in Arden, with Buncombe County Recreation. This popular event is free and features a variety of classic fall activities for the whole family. From recreation to entertainment to the scarecrow contest, there. This event will feature arts and crafts, food, music, games, and Autumnal themes. Vendors will be selling locally made arts and crafts, there will be food and beverage trucks, and folk band 81 drifters will keep you tapping your toes. Activities will include a pumpkin patch with a painting station, light displays, photo ops, outdoor arcade games, and more. And of course, scarecrow contest entries will be on display, and visitors may vote on which is their favorite with the winner being announced during the festival. Some activities have nominal fees. Oct 29th 1:00pm-10:00pm – The Surreal Sirkus Arts Festival: Sideshow in Pack Square Park in Downtown Asheville. Throughout the park, different theme camps will be set up and invite you to come play. There will be flow skills areas and cyr wheel, collective art projects and live music camps. Witch camp and stages for poetry and spoken word. Mushrooms that play synthesizers and butoh zombies. Clowns, puppets, fire dancers, art vendors, and so much more! And of course, there will be the dance party. Oct 15th (9am-5pm) & Oct 16th (9am-4pm) – Wooly Worm Festival in Downtown Banner Elk. Since 1978, the residents of Banner Elk nestled between the Carolina’s largest ski resorts have celebrated the coming of the snow season with a Woolly Worm Festival. They set aside the third weekend in October to determine which one worm will have the honor of predicting the severity of the coming winter, and they make that worm earn the honor by winning heat after heat of hard-fought races – up a three-foot length of string. - SHADOW OF THE BEAR NATURAL PHENOMENON NEAR CASHIERS – Daily, Mid Oct through Nov 5:30pm-6:00pm(ish) – Coming out of hibernation each Autumn, “The Shadow of the Bear” is visible for 30 minutes on sunny days between 5:30pm and 6:00pm from mid-October through early November due to the setting of the autumnal sun behind the mountain. The best viewing spot for the shadow is right off Highway 64 in a place called Rhodes Big View Overlook, atop Whiteside Mountain. It starts with a small dark shadow at the bottom of the valley, and grows until it finally evolves into the bear. The Shadow of the Bear also occurs in late winter from mid-February through early March. LEARN MORE HERE

Oct 21st 6:30pm & 8:00pm – “The Legend of Tommy Hodges,” outdoor drama at Cradle of Forestry. Show times for both evenings will be limited to a total of 75 participants per showing. During this unique and exciting outdoor performance, audiences will travel back in time to the year 1901 and hear yarns about the legendary Tommy Hodges, a student of the Biltmore Forest School who went missing one autumn night. Audiences will be led around the Biltmore Campus Trail by different characters from the play and watch as the story unfolds around them from all sides. In addition, audience members are invited to dress up in Biltmore Forest School-era clothing (early 1900’s) to fully immerse themselves in the event and take part in the story. The show is a one-mile-long experience, as the audience walks the well-lit trail to see the entire play and takes about 45 minutes to an hour. The story is better suitable for ages six and up. Oct 8th 10:00am-4:00pm – Pottery Pumpkin Patch at Reems Creek Pottery in Weaverville. The potters at Reems Creek Pottery have been growing ceramic pumpkins this summer in anticipation of an abundance of finished pumpkins for their first pumpkin patch event. From mini 1” high pumpkins to larger pumpkins that have grown to almost a foot tall, there will be pumpkins for all your fall themed decorating. Weather permitting, the pumpkins will be displayed outside on the grounds of the pottery studio. In addition, there will be a small pop-up craft market in the parking area with about a dozen crafters ranging from jewelry to denim, to wooden spoons to pocketbooks, trays, and so much more. These pop up markets started at Reems Creek Pottery in 2020, and have been presented twice a year to give a chance for local, smaller crafters to display and sell their creations.
