“Snooty critic Sheridan Whiteside is invited to dinner at the home of the Stanleys, where he slips on their doorstep and breaks his hip. Six weeks later, the Stanley household is still monopolized by the cranky and demanding invalid who insults the family, runs up a $784 phone bill, and receives strange gifts from his friends (penguins! cockroaches! an octopus!) – all of which cause further chaos.
