The Crafty Historian @ The Asheville History Center at Smith Mcdowell House | Asheville | North Carolina | United States

“Crafty Historian events are held on the third Saturday of most months from 10:30 to 12:30.
Reservations are required by Thursday prior to the event so that we will have enough supplies for everyone.
Each event includes an educational, art-focused activity that stimulates creativity and interest in traditional crafts.
Children 9 and older are welcome to attend without a parent (although parents are most welcome to stay and assist), and younger children must have an adult to help them.
There is a minimal charge for each program based on the type of craft for the day. These events are wonderful opportunities for both parents/grandparents and children to experience history in a fun and interactive way. “

Oct 19th: Paper Quilling … Come join the Crafty Historian and try your hand at paper quilling. Quilling is the art of curling strips of paper into interesting designs. The craft got its name from from the way paper strips were curled around bird quills (a feather’s center backbone). Colonial artists decorated candle holders and tea trays with pretty quilling. We will practice with strips of paper and then create a work of art! Best for ages 8 and up. The craft requires working with small pieces and glue. Limit of 12 participants. $5 per participant.

.

Nov 16th: A Crafts Hodge-Podge … A hodge-podge is defined as a mixture of different things. It’s time to use up lots of leftover craft supplies and this sounds like just the thing. Some crafts I have all the supplies for many things, but crafters are welcome to bring things that you want decorated with beads, sequins or decoupage. Be prepared for a bit of confusion with lots of things going on, but it will be LOTS of fun!! This might be the last Crafty Historian since our resident Crafty Historian will be resigning as of Nov 30 – so if you’ve been a fan of these events, this is not one you want to miss! Only $5 per crafter!
