Child prodigies add novelty to most musical performances. But it’s even more awe-inspiring to see a recently minted human play traditional music as old as the Appalachian towns from whence it came. At age 15, Rhiannon Ramsey is doing just that — fiddling alongside local string band veterans who make up the New Relics: Craig Bannerman (bass), Troy Harrison (banjo, guitar, mandolin). Her musicianship and comfort onstage, however, convey anything but newness. Instead, the Arvil Freeman protégé and her bandmates settle into their mountain-made tunes with ease.

The New Relics include Troy Harrison and Craig Bannerman. Troy has been playing music for over 30 years. A multi-instrumentalist, he plays mainly banjo, mandolin and guitar while carrying on the traditions of his family and community from Madison County. The legendary banjo player and ballad singer, Obray Ramsey was a major influence on Troy’s music. When not making music with Rhiannon and the New Relics, he also plays with Crooked Pine. Craig Bannerman started playing traditional Appalachian and bluegrass music in 1973. He has played mandolin, guitar, dulcimers and bass. He has played with many bands over the past 40 years and is well known in the Western North Carolina music scene. He currently plays bass and sings with Rhiannon and the New Relics and Crooked Pine.

With a focus on the bounty that Transylvania County has to offer, the Market has more than 60 vendors offering fresh, locally-grown produce, meat, poultry, eggs, honey, cheeses, vinegars and mustard, pickles and barbeque sauce, mushrooms, plants, herbs, cut flowers, baked goods (including gluten-free!), jams & jellies, hot breakfast items, coffee, prepared foods, and a variety of handcrafted and artisan items from local producers. Throughout the season, the Market hosts weekly music, activities for kids, and special events.

The Transylvania Farmers Market is located in Brevard, NC, and on other weeks can be found just off East Main Street behind Comporium at the corner of Johnson and Jordan Streets. It is open on Saturdays through November from 8am to 12pm. Winter market runs from December through April from 10am to 12pm.
