BoJangles’ Easter Eggstravaganza (toddler to 11yrs)

Come to the area’s largest free Easter celebration, Bojangles’ Easter Eggstravaganza! The fun will include free giant inflatables, crafts, face painting and a performance by the Mountain Thunder Cloggers. Egg hunts for ages 4-11 will be held at 4pm and a special egg hunt area will be available for ages 3 and under for the duration of the event. Bring your camera for a family photo with the Easter Bunny and do the chicken dance with Bo, the Bojangles’ Chicken. Children receive a free goody bag (whole supplies last). FREE

Vance Peace Garden Tree Pruning Workshop and Workday

The Vance Peace Garden is partnering with the Roots Foundation and the Buncombe Fruit and Nut Club to offer a tree and shrub pruning workshop. Come out and learn how to prune your perennials to increase their vitality and production! In the process, you will be helping to prune trees and shrubs in the Peace Garden.

Snacks and coffee will be provided! Drop in any time during the workday. Bring your pruning sheers and hand saws. Smaller children are also welcome, there will be little-one friendly activities as well!

Kid’s Dance Party! (all ages)

It’s a DANCE PARTY for the kiddos! And a fun time for all! Beer and wine for the adults, snacks and juice boxes for the kids (all natural, of course!), and loads of music! Bring the whole family! We’ve got mats for the wee ones, some fun circus toys, and lots of space!

2020 French Broad River Fins & Gills Classic Fishing Tournament

Meet at Woodfin Riverside Park. Two ways to fish: from a boat or from the bank.

Red Wolf Teen Leaders Monthly Weekend Program (12-17yrs)

The Red Wolf Teen Leaders program cultivates teens who are equally comfortable and competent both in their communities and in the natural world. This is accomplished through community service, an ever deepening knowledge of place, and wilderness survival skills.

Teens in this program will develop a solid awareness of their individual gifts and will be well equipped to carry these gifts forward. Participants in RWTL will go on a series of adventures where they learn essential survival skills such as fire by friction, building natural shelters, wild food foraging and much more.

To provide a program that is accessible to families and yet offers a deep experience for the teens, we’re offering this program in 3 separate monthly classes that can be taken individually or as a whole. Each month consists of a Friday evening to Sunday afternoon weekend campout that has it’s own unique character, and together the 3 months weave a comprehensive and empowering wilderness experience.

Digital stories are short first person narrative movies that use images, voice and music to tell a compelling personal story. Digital stories are a great way for people of all ages to reflect upon and make meaning of their life experiences. Art-o-biographical in nature, the act of making a digital story encourages self-understanding and creativity, while deepening writing, photography, technology, and media literacy skills. In this Making Lab participants will be guided through the steps of the digital storytelling process to create their own 2-3 minute autobiographical digital story, using their mobile devices. We will learn about the underlying philosophy of the digital storytelling movement as well as script writing, audio recording, iphoneography, visual storytelling, video editing and production. The lab will culminate in a group screening of our digital stories.
Supplies: Each participant will need to bring a mobile device capable of taking photographs and video. (Iphone, Ipad, Ipod touch, Android phones etc…) Students will also need to purchase and download a mobile editing app- TBA (average cost between $5-$10)

Using a new form of self-portraiture, Selfies, as our reference, students in this week long summer class will learn the ancient tradition of felting wool fiber while replicating their own image in felted wool from the amazing and talented Lisa Klakulak of Strong Felt. Understand the biology of the wool that allows it to mat together in an unwoven textile using only water, soap and the movement of your hands! Using the color wheel and basic math we’ll create recipes for blending colors and values of wool to match those in your Selfie. We’ll learn about the proportions of the human head and how lighting and the shadows created make a 2-D image look 3-D. An opportunity to display the classes finished portraits will be pursued because they are going to be remarkable!  There will be some free design time, snack time and outside time if desired by the group. Form + Function: Design Thinking In Situ

Join us as we walk through the design thinking process, designing and building a chair from scratch. From understanding how form meets function to engineering strength and support, this project is both an introduction into design-thinking as well as basic wood working skills.  The final outcome of this workshop is for each learner to have a fully functional chair and understand the basic design-thinking principles behind it. From the initial drawing design stage to the dry fit assembly, testing and final assembly this workshop encompasses those critical skills like conceptualization of a plan, hands-on motor skills and relational thinking when it comes to the chair’s actual functioning in the real world.  There will be free design time, snack time and outside time if desired by the group. Dreams, Designs and Doodles: Documenting YOUR Story

Zooming Planes, Magical Maps and Towering Trees
Ages 3-6
Monday – Friday from 9am – 1pm

Come join us this week as we are inspired by our amazing natural world!  We will spend time outside playing, observing and sketching the beauty we find.  We will be learning all about trees and the birds that flock to them.  We will look up as high as we can to find and paint the clouds!  And we will draw, paint, and sculpt all things gardens!! Recycled Rainbows, Race cars and Rhinos
