First Annual West Asheville Leisure Olympics!
On Saturday, April 23rd, from 10:30 am to 4pm, Hall Fletcher Elementary’s Parent-Teacher Organization will host the first annual West Asheville Leisure Olympics, a family-friendly, community spring celebration that is free and open to the public.
West Asheville Leisure Olympics, or WALO (pronounced WAY-LOW) is a one-of-a-kind sporting event that combines healthy competition with leisure sports (yard games.) In addition to many free yard games happening around the field, players can register in advance to compete in one of three competitions including Bocce Ball, Disc Golf, or Cornhole. Registration is $13 per player and all proceeds go to benefit Hall Fletcher Elementary’s PTO. Winners in each Pro category will receive a $25 gift certificate to Black Dome Sports!
West Asheville Leisure Olympics will begin with Opening Ceremonies at 10:30am, featuring a performance by the students in our MusicWorks Symphony program, an award-winning, afterschool program that uses music education as a transformative and empowering tool to teach life skills. At noon, Ms. Rachel Lubitz, director of the FEAST garden program at Hall Fletcher, will fire up the wood-fired pizza oven for a garden pizza potluck! The potluck is free, and all participants are asked to bring a pizza topping, cheese, sauce, or uncooked pizza dough. The Hop will be on hand to sell ice cream to our participants as well.
Hall Fletcher Elementary, located at 60 Ridgelawn Road in East-West Asheville, in addition to being Asheville’s smallest public elementary school and a magnet school for science, math, and technology, serves the highest proportion of minority, low-income, and special-needs students of any school in the city. The Hall Fletcher community wishes to shift their focus away from restructuring for a moment, and focus instead on community building, relaxation and fun, and on celebrating another successful year together. Hall Fletcher invites the whole Asheville community to join us for a laid-back, fun event to raise spirits and celebrate our awesome kids and families.
