Endangered Species Day

Enjoy a day of educational stops along our paved trails and learn facts about endangered and threatened species. Every station will host biofacts and an activity along with a stamp for your Activity Check List provided at the front desk upon check-in. Collect all 5 stamps from our education stations and enter your name into the Endangered Species Gift Basket Drawing.

Education Stations:
Cougars – Long Jump on the Boardwalk, measure your stride,
compare to the length of a school bus
Red Wolf – Wolf Mask
Hellbender – water quality , testing with pH strips
Spotted Turtle – Compare baby turtle with an adult
American Chestnut – Mast Count/Estimation Game

Spring Festival and Growing in the Mountain Plant Show

The WNC Farmers Market Spring Festival & Growing in the Mountain Plant Sale brings together the best of spring in the mountains! Join us to celebrate and shop from local farmers, growers, and makers. Everything you need to get your garden ready for the growing season: huge selection of veggie and herb starts, flowers, trees, shrubs, hanging baskets, and other landscaping plants. Enjoy local food trucks that will be featuring ramps and local fiber farmers and producers selling and demonstrating heritage skills with the Local Cloth FiberFest. Live music, local coffee, sweet treats, a kids tent with games, and much more!

Every year since 1977, International Museum Day is organized on May 18. From America to Oceania and from Africa and Europe to Asia, this year’s event celebrates the theme, “Museums and Cultural Landscapes.” Institutions around the world open their doors and organize programs that explore how museums are responsible for their landscapes – both inside or outside their walls, and both physical and cultural – by contributing knowledge and taking an active role in their management and upkeep.

1st Annual Rainbow Flea Marketplace

On Saturday, May 21st, Rainbow Community School will host the first Rainbow Flea, a community marketplace to upcycle and sell household items, clothing and art. Let this be the start of something great! This old school flea market will serve as a benefit, with profit going toward the Rainbow Bus Campaign in their efforts to secure an adventure activity bus for Rainbow students.

Hiking with Kids Basics

Join us for a Hiking/Backing with Children class. This is the 100th Anniversary of our National Parks, let’s take the children out to see and enjoy them!

Course overview

A fun part of parenting is sharing the experiences you have most enjoyed in life with your kids. If you have a love for the outdoors it is only natural you would want to teach your children about its wonders. How to do this while recognizing their special needs is not hard, it just takes a little planning. Be patient and thoughtful, and soon you will find they are as excited as you are about spending a day outside. This program is designed to help facilitate your family fun outside.

Have you wanted to try camping with your family but don’t know how to get started? Join REI to learn what you need to take your first (or second or third) camping trip. We will cover the basics including: how to be warm, dry and comfortable camping, gear and equipment necessities, ideas for fun activities; and great local areas to give it a try. Camping is a fun and affordable way to take a vacation -outdoors! No experience necessary!

Mother with Courage Postpartum Support Circle

No matter which path you’re on – breast, bottle, crib, bed-sharing, SAHM, back-to-work, or any combination of choices – it takes a brave heart to be a mother. Join us for our Mother with Courage postpartum support circle, a safe space to share the joys, challenges, breakdowns and breakthroughs of new motherhood. This group is for pregnant and new moms with new babies to toddlers and is by donation or free if needed.

Mother with Courage Support Circle meets every Monday 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Family Cooking Class

Join us as we make yummy smoothies! Everyone is welcome, but children 6 and under must be accompanied by a parent.

Farm Summer Camp (5-10yrs)

Our summer camp program is based on the idea that children need the opportunity to learn and play in an outdoor setting.  Through 15 years of experience leading outdoor based summer camps I have seen how the chance for a child to not only spend time outside, but have the chance to thrive in the outdoors can make a huge impact on a child’s life.  We interact with nature through games, art, science and of course the farm animals.

A typical day will start with some games to get the body and mind moving.  From there we will go and have time with the animals feeding and learning about animal care.  After a quick snack we will have our theme time, where we explore more in depth the topic of the week, be it aquatic life, wildflowers, amphibians, or any other topic relating to the many types of flora and fauna of the region.  After theme time we will clean up and have our second snack before it is time for camp to end.  Each week will of course include creek time where we explore, play in and build along Holland Creek.

Our themes for the summer are:

  • Farm Animals – We will focus on the different animals on the farm.  Life cycle, feeding habits and care needed. (6/13 & 7/11)
  • Fauna of the Southern Appalachians – We will focus on the wild animals that live in our area. (6/20 & 7/18)
  • Flora of the Southern Appalachians – We will focus on the wild flowers and plants in our area. (6/27 & 7/25)
  • Nature Art – We will use materials we find around the farm to create art in a variety of forms. (7/4 & 8/1)
  • Wild Week – The last week of camp will be filled with activities to celebrate the end of camp, lots of fun!!! (8/8)

Summer camp is for children ages 5-10 years old.  The camp runs from 8:30a-1:00p.  We will be offering camp the weeks of 6/13, 6/20, 6/27, 7/4*, 7/11, 7/18, 7/25, 8/1, 8/8.  *there will be no camp on 7/4.

Cost for the camp is $95 per week.  Max of 14 children per week.  Staff ratio of 1 to 7
