The summer party has always been known as the 47th Annual Roasting of the Hog, even back when it consisted of 100 potluckers and one pig at Wade’s house. The following year, Wade relocated the roast to a friend’s hotel, but kept the “47th Annual” name. When the fire department in 1974 took over the event, it followed suit.
“The tradition carries on, but now it’s 2000-plus people,” says Wade. “They have bands and clogging and all that kind of stuff.”
