Screening #2 of “School’s Out: Lessons from a Forest Kindergarten”
We’re offering a second screening of this award-winning documentary about forest kindergarten in Switzerland. The film is surprisingly engaging, entertaining and informative, and addresses many questions and concerns that parents and educators may have about this “new” and alternative education model.
We will also be briefly discussing our new school, Asheville Forest School–a new nature-based school for ages 3 1/2 – 6 that is based on the Waldkindergarten (“forest kindergarten” in German) concept shown in the film. While mainstream American preschools are increasingly focused on academics, technology and staying indoors, we will be taking children out into the woods every day, whatever the weather, and encourage free play and interest-directed learning in the ultimate classroom, Mother Nature.
Film trailer here: http://
This informational event is free!
We’ll be in the Lenoir-Rhyne University boardroom on the second floor, in the same building as the Asheville Visitor Center.

Asheville Forest School screening of “School’s Out: Lessons from a Forest Kindergarten”
Asheville Forest School is a new nature-based school for ages 3 1/2 – 6 that is based on the Waldkindergarten (“forest kindergarten” in German) concept that has been so beneficial to European children. Mainstream American preschools are increasingly focused on academics, technology and staying indoors. In contrast, we take children out into the woods every day, whatever the weather, and encourage free play and interest-directed learning in the ultimate classroom, Mother Nature.
“School’s Out: Lessons from a Forest Kindergarten” is a powerful and award-winning 35-minute documentary following a Waldkindergarten in Switzerland. It addresses many questions and concerns that parents and educators may have about this “new” and alternative education model. We’ll be screening this film and discussing our new school!

Meditation for Moms and Dads (kids welcome!)
A family friendly event to celebrate the release of Shana Smith’s new book, “Meditation for Moms and Dads”! Join the author for banana yoga (musical yoga for kids), a GEM circle (Good Energy Magical Mantra Music for kids and families), family meditation, followed by snacks and a supervised craft for kids while parents join in on the book reading, discussion, and signing.
This event is made possible with the support of our neighbors, West Asheville Yoga Studio. Check them out!
Shana Smith is a mom, musician, meditator, marine biologist, teacher, and writer. She is an avid and longtime student of Zen and Buddhism, a decades-long yogi, and a much sought-after kirtaniya, or devotional chanting leader. Known across the state of Florida and the U.S. for the past 20 years as her children’s entertainment persona “Shana Banana,” Shana and her family (husband Dan, daughter Grace Ohana, and son Benny Albert) have settled down in Gainesville, Florida to run their meditation- and yoga-based Gainesville Retreat Center, which attracts many renowned teachers and practitioners.
