The Story Walk

Enjoy reading while walking along the Richland Creek Trail at Vance Street Park in Waynesville. Pages from a children’s picture book are placed in displays within sight-distance of one another. Get lost in a book while exercising and spread the joy of reading!

The StoryWalk© Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. The local Story Walk was made possible by the Medford Fund from The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina and the Haywood County Public Library Foundation.

The story revolves around the central character, Richard Hannay, who inadvertently gets tangled in a mysterious web of spies, murder, and love. Remarkably, the entire riveting narrative unfolds through the talents of just four actors, who collectively portray over 150 characters, masterfully switching roles with lightning speed. Brimming with clever references to Hitchcock’s filmography, wry British humor, and ingeniously crafted theatrical inventiveness, The 39 Steps promises a rollicking evening of entertainment that leaves audiences on the edge of their seats. The conflict spirals into an all-out war of taste, class, privilege, and entitlement. April 21st-May 14th, 2023; Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 2:30 pm … Bright Star; Music, Book, & Story by Steve Martin; Music, Lyrics, & Story by Edie Brickell … Set in our very own Blue Ridge Mountains, Bright Star tells the story of Alice at two different points in her life: as a young girl in the mountains, and 22 years later as the well-to-do editor of a successful Asheville magazine. A serendipitous encounter inspires Alice to face her past, and a stunning realization changes her life forever. Bright Star is based on the Grammy Award-winning bluegrass album, Love Has Come for You, and centers particularly on the song “Iron Mountain Baby.” Be sure to listen also for the song with our namesake – “Asheville”! Content Warning: Bright Star contains swearing, language that some may find blasphemous, incidental drinking and smoking, and kidnapping. The musical – at turns both haunting and hilarious – deals with themes of racism and revenge, hypocrisy and forgiveness. Oct 22-23, 2022, Saturday at 6:30 pm and Sunday at 2:30 pm … YPC: The Prom book by Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin; Music by Matthew Sklar; Lyrics by Chad Beguelin; Directed by Michael Jorizzo … Emma just wants to go to the prom – with her girlfriend Alyssa! But the PTA is not having it. A duo of vain Broadway actors who happen to be in town catch wind of the drama, and they want to improve their public image after some justified bad press. After stumbling across Emma’s dilemma, they team up with a Julliard grad, an overlooked Chorus girl, and Emma to protest the PTA and regain their popularity. With the help of fun musical numbers, the self-centered actors and Emma try to convince the PTA and town that her love deserves to be celebrated, not hidden away! TICKETS HERE

Parents Afternoon Out (3ys-12yrs)

Let us help you relax, rejuvenate, and reconnect! The YMCA’s Parents Afternoon Out program provides a safe, nurturing environment for children to participate in a variety of organized activities, while giving parents a break.

Programs are open to children ages 12 months to 12 years at multiple locations, on different dates, at a variety of times. Each one is different, so choose the one that’s most convenient for you.

Parents Afternoon Out programs are a fun and affordable alternative to babysitting. You don’t have to be a Y member to sign up, although members get the best rate.

  • YMCA member: $35 per child, per program
  • Non-member: $50 per child, per program

Children ages 12 months-3 years

  • Please bring diapers, wipes, and a change of clothing. If your child wears cloth diapers, please bring a plastic bag.
  • Staff are permitted to change diapers for children ages 3 and younger only.
