Hike of the Week: “Day Hiking Do’s and Don’ts”
Do you want to start hiking, but get too intimidated by all the fancy gear that you “have” to have? Would you enjoy the woods if you knew how to deal with animal encounters? Or are you too worried you’ll get lost to even start down the trail? Ignore your doubts, and let us teach you how to prepare for a fun day in our National Parks—no panic necessary!
Join us for an easy-to- moderate hike, approximately 2 miles round-trip. Meet at Sleepy Gap Overlook, roughly Milepost 397.3. Wear good hiking shoes, bring some water, and be prepared for changeable weather.
Call (828) 298-5330, extension 304 for more information.

Family Fun Down on the Farm
A visit to Lyda Farms is an opportunity to experience a 5th generation heritage farm and apple orchard located in Hendersonville NC near Asheville. The farm has family fun activities, including a self-guided tour around the barnyard to observe farm animals in a working farm setting, an authentic fresh fruit and vegetable roadside market, and some great photo opportunities. From June through November, young and old love to get their picture taken beside our main attraction, Juicy. In the fall, the NC apples, pumpkins, winter squash and indian corn are on display. And everyone likes to get their picture made sitting on the tree stump chair.
Bring your camera and capture family fun and farm activities, including posing next to Juicy, the farmyard animals, or the pumpkin displays, and sitting on the tree stump stool.
Juicy – the Giant Apple Bug
Juicy, our resident giant apple bug, is Lyda Farms’ number one attraction. After residing several years in the apple orchard, she crawled to the front yard and has been the main attraction ever since.
FREE Children’s Farm Animal / Barnyard Tour
Children of all ages love to wander around the barnyard and visit our friendly farm animals, such as donkeys, turkeys, goats, geese, ducks and chickens. During the tour, kids can explore the barnyard, greet the animals, and get acquainted with their new animal friends. Just head out to the barnyard and begin your journey of animal discovery.
For your protection, and the protection of the animals, we do not allow petting the animals, nor do we force them from their shelters. But quite often, they’ll be curious about seeing you, and come out to visit in the farmyard.
Outdoor Picnic Area
We have outdoor picnic tables available on a first come, first serve basis, and groups are more than welcome with or without sack lunches.
Bring the whole family to visit Lyda Farms in the fall, and plan to spend a while choosing from our large selection of pumpkins, plus all the assorted gourds, late fall vegetables, and of course our mouth-watering Western NC apples.
