NEEF’s focus is educating the public on how the environment impacts their lives. Hundreds of public use sites participate in NPLD each year.
Examples of service projects your boy scouts troop, youth group, homeschool group, etc. may participate in include:
If you are a group leader with an interest in service, find out how your group can “lend a hand, care for the land” at the Cradle of Forestry on NPLD by calling (828) 877-3130.

“Bring Back the Monarchs” is a nationwide campaign thru the nonprofit Monarch Watch. “The goals of this program are to restore 20 milkweed species, used by monarch caterpillars as food, to their native ranges throughout the United States and to encourage the planting of nectar-producing native flowers that support adult monarchs and other pollinators.” The Monarch Waystation initiative encourages participation in conservation of these butterflies at any sites across the nation.

Meet these llamas, fascinating pack animals, each with their own “personality.” Guided walks follow a 2-mile paved trail along the Forest Festival and Forest Discovery Trail. Presented by Challenge Adventures.
Walks begin at 11:00 a.m. & 2:00 p.m.
Begun in 1989, Challenge Adventures creates adventures for youth and organizations focusing on the environment, youth therapy and empowerment.
Why llamas? “Llamas are gentle animals with a strong social structure. Each llama has a unique role in the herd and the herd itself provides a vivid living metaphor that CA therapists use to teach lessons about cooperation and teamwork. The llama also provides a projective device… participants frequently project their own identity, wishes and motivations onto their llama.” On their website you can read the bios of each llama.
During this walk learn about special traits llamas have for the trail. You have the chance to take turns leading a llama. Your lunch & snacks are carried for you while ice tea is provided. Please pack your lunch.
Event entrance is $5.00 for ages 16 and up, free for youth. Includes entrance to the site’s trails, exhibits, gift shop, and any special tours offered that day.
Please make plans to join us for an OPEN HOUSE here at Studio 52 on Tuesday, August 30th between 5:30 and 7:30. Tour the building, talk to teachers about classes and auditions, and check us out!
