KAPLAN AUDITORIUM: Rodney H. Leftwich, local pottery artist, will discuss the life, works, and techniques of Walter B. Stephen, a pioneer and potter. Stephen settled in the Skyland area in 1913 and built one of his Nonconnah Potteries. In 1926, he built Pisgah Forest Pottery. Stephen was an early member of the Folk Art Guild and developed glazes and cameo wares. Mr. Leftwich is a member of the Folk Art Guild and is the author of “Pisgah Forest and Nonconnah, The Potteries of Walter B. Stephen”. He began studying the historical techniques of Western North Carolina Pottery in the 1970s. In addition to presenting a multimedia talk, Mr. Leftwich will display examples of this pottery style.
The Library has a permanent display of Stephen’s pottery at the Main Library in Hendersonville. Support for this program is provided by the Friends of the Library. |
