8th Annual West Asheville Garden Stroll
Please join us at the Eighth Annual West Asheville Garden Stroll (WAGS), Saturday September 10, 2016. This year’s theme “Growing with West Asheville,” will be highlighted during a family-friendly kickoff ceremony starting at 10:30am at Vance Elementary School, 98 Sulphur Springs Rd., Asheville. The kickoff site will feature information about local organizations and displays showcasing the projects of WAGS 2016 Seed Money Grant recipients. Stroll guides will be available at the kickoff site all day.
The kickoff ceremony will start at 10:30 am, and the gardens will be open from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm, rain or shine.
The West Asheville Garden Stroll is a non-profit endeavor led by a group of passionate gardeners. It is FREE and open to the public. Please leave your four legged friends at home.

WNC Veteran’s Mural Dedication
Join us as we dedicate the Veteran’s mural to our local heroes September 11th, Patriot Day at 4 pm. There will be a motorcycle procession led by the Patriot Guard down King Street. The Patriot Guard will be escorting the familes of loved ones who have lost a family member fighting for our country. Stand along King Street, bring an American flag and line the streets as we welcome these families and ALL of our local veterans to the mural dedication in their honor.

Robert V. Staton Pavilion Dedication
The Park at Flat Rock and Recreation Foundation, Inc. is pleased to announce the official dedication of the Robert V. Staton Pavilion inside The Park at Flat Rock. The event is free and open to the public. Guests will enjoy bluegrass music and an assortment of refreshments.
The Pavilion construction and furnishings were made possible a grant from the Community Foundation of Henderson County, appropriated Village funds and an anonymous donor who wanted to honor the work and commitment to community of Bob Staton. The Village Council unanimously supported the naming of this facility in The Park.
The Pavilion can be reserved for exclusive use from April to October on weekdays and on the second and fourth weekend. Availability schedule and reservation application can be found online, but the reservation application and appropriate fees must be delivered in person to the Flat Rock Village Hall. The Pavilion can be used at other times by the public if not already reserved. When the pavilion structure was envisioned by the Village Council the uses were proposed to be picnics, musical and theatrical performances, craft, art and exercise classes, family gatherings, shelter from weather and a fun place to gather.
The Flat Rock Park and Recreation Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2013 by the Village of Flat Rock, North Carolina to help raise the funds required to fulfill the vision of a signature municipal park for the community. That vision includes opportunities for recreation, health, and education for all generations while preserving the natural beauty that draws visitors from far and wide to Western North Carolina.

City of Hendersonville 5th Annual 5K Turkey Trot
The City of Hendersonville’s Wellness Committee will be hosting their annual Turkey Trot 5k Thanksgiving morning, November 22. The Trot is a run/walk event open to all ages, all fitness levels and all family members! The 5k starts in front of City Hall on Thanksgiving morning at 8:30 and travels through downtown ending back at City Hall. The entry fee is $11 which includes a t-shirt. This is a non-sanctioned event – we’re here for fun and exercise. Event is rain or shine, sleet or snow!
Registrations received by November 6 will be guaranteed their t-shirt size. After that, no promises.
Volunteers are needed and will receive a free t-shirt. Volunteer form
Three prizes will be given prior to the start for those pre-registered: oldest participant, farthest traveled, and family with the most participants.
So, bring the kids, bring grandma, bring the dog. Be part of this fun event before sitting down to your Thanksgiving meal.

“Look Homeward, Riverside” Cemetery Tour
Join us for a walk into Thomas Wolfe’s “Altamont”
After Look Homeward, Angel was published in October 1929 many Asheville citizens were outraged to find themselves portrayed, often negatively, in the book. Discover some of the real people behind the fiction! Join us for the Look Homeward walking tour of Riverside Cemetery. The tours include information about the real person and quotes from Wolfe’s work describing the fictional person. Meet your guide at the gate to the cemetery.

Winter Warmer Land- Community Outreach Project
Collecting weekly: heaters, blankets, coats, hats, scarves, socks, gloves, blankets and sleeping bags to help keep the people of Asheville and surrounding areas warm and healthy through these cold months. There will be pick-up times and locations weekly throughout the month and coming months. The first is Tuesday Sept. 20, 2016 at 12:30-1:00 pm, Westgate, by Jason’s Deli. There will also be free bread/bagels/baguettes distributed during this time to anyone who would like some. Weekly meetings will be hereafter announced, likely at the same time same location (in Jason’s Deli parking lot).
