The Complicated Legacy of Zebulon Vance Symposium
The Vance Birthplace and the University of North Carolina at Asheville will offer an opportunity to meet and discuss the many contexts of North Carolina’s Civil War governor, Zebulon Vance. This symposium will examine the Southern Appalachian community that would shape our governor and the governor who would shape our state. With topics from the civil war to race relations, our goal is to engage the community in a discussion and shed light on our state’s history and issues of past and current significance.

Schools & Scouts Day
Calling all scouts & homeschoolers!
The Vance Birthplace is combining all of our lessons and activities in this hands-on day. Step inside our early 19th century home and learn about how life has changed through time. Visit our classroom and become the detective in our history mystery program that explores artifacts from long ago. Or, stop at one of our many stations including open hearth cooking, living history, and toy making.
Four activities will count towards the Vance Birthplace Scout Patch. Complete 1-3 more, depending on your level, before the event and you will be awarded your free patch! Email vance@ncdcr.gov for complete information.
$4 per child per session. Space is limited. Registration is required and will open on March 1st.
