In the Blue Ridge Mountains, March is a month of change. Depending on the weather it can be the end of winter or the beginning of spring. Join one of our naturalists to enjoy this slower time of year to discover Mother Nature preparing for the season ahead. This hike is approximately 1.5 miles and takes around an hour.

Presented by the Hands On! Museum: Your space ship has crash landed on an unidentified planet. You and your crew must survive by building a shelter and acquiring food and water. In this class, students will use their knowledge of space travel and survival instincts to build a successful colony. Space is limited, so registration is required. Program is designed for 7-11 year olds.
May 3rd: Fizz, Boom, Science: Don’t Try This at Home! … Join Dr. Bunsen & Dr. Beaker on a fast paced journey through the scientific process with hypotheses, observations, and changing variables. Fizz, Boom, Science! is sure to engage participants in hands-on science demonstrations and experiments that fizz, boom, pop, and more. Students will receive a take home science activity to reinforce concept learned in the program. Funded by the Friends of the Mills River Library. Registration is Required, so call or stop by the Mills River Library to sign up!
CHILDREN’S AUDITORIUM: Teens grades 9-12, read The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey and come talk about the book with other teens. Snacks will be served. To request a copy of the book and sign up, call or come by the Youth Services Desk at the Main Library, 697-4725, ext. 2312.
MARCH 28TH: DOWNSTAIRS: Basics of Wilderness First Aid (5yrs-Adult) … A Park Ranger from Chimney Rock State Park will teach us some very simple steps to help the most common ourtdoor injuries. This free program is suited for ages 5 through adult.
APRIL 18TH: Spectacular Spiders (All Ages) … DOWNSTAIRS: A Park Ranger from Chimney Rock State Park will teach us all about spiders! This free program is for all ages.
MARCH 24TH: Rockin’ Reptiles and Epic Amphibians … Presented by Chimney Rock State Park: Reptiles and amphibians are often confused, but don’t even think they’re the same. The difference between these two groups of mysterious animals is vast and intriguing. Investigate these fascinating critters with a Naturalist and meet some of Chimney Rock’s resident ambassadors. All ages are welcome! Free and open to the public- this program is paid for by the Friends of the Mills River Library.
APRIL 17TH: Radical Raptors and Marvelous Mammals … Many mammals and birds of prey have always fascinated us and are the origin of many legends. Realizing the importance of these predators, and sometimes prey, will help you understand the role they play in our ecosystem. This fun program will discuss birds of prey and animal traits, various habitats, and even address some unwarranted bad raps! Don’t forget your camera for photos of some of our most popular animal ambassadors. All ages are welcome! Free and open to the public- this program is paid for by the Friends of the Mills River Library.

KAPLAN AUDITORIUM: Celebration of National Quilt Day with a Quilt challenge and the winning quilt will be chosen by the public! Presented by the WNC Quilt Guild.
