Christmas Tour of Historic Mitchell County Sites
All our Sites for 2017 are at least a century old; they will include the historic Penland Post Office. The building was constructed in 1902 and has housed the Post Office since 1934, making it the oldest active postal facility in Mitchell County. In Huntdale, participants will tour the old Phin Peterson Store, a fixture in the community for many years, and see the former hotel and other historic structures. In Bakersville, we will tour the Historic Mitchell County Courthouse, plus check out two other Bakersville buildings steeped in history – the Greene Building, which has housed many businesses through the years, from a general store and parmacy to an Indoor Market, and the Blevins Building, which was once amovie theater and most recently Crimson Laurel Gallery. By popular demand, the English Inn in Spruce Pine (Brenda and Bill Sparks, owners) is back on the Tour again this year. Construction on the Inn began in the second half of the 18th century.
The cost to tour all the sites is $25, or $15 to tour any 3 sites. If purchased in advance, tickets will be $20 and $12. Tour participants may ride the Mitchell County Transportation van for an additional fee of $5 per person. You must reserve a seat prior to Saturday, November 25th. Please call the MCHS office at (828)688-4371.
