Forming of the Militia
Relive the history!
Lexington and Concord was a year ago, 1775 the suttlers on the frontier, approximately two families per square mile, ‘tho not much concerned over a war with Great Britain, did have the worry of attacks by the Cherokee. Those indians encouraged by the King’s agents, Stuart and Cameron, to reclaim their hunting grounds from the colonists, word of burned cabins and massacred families reached the Committee of Safety daily. For their protection, men between the age of 16 and 60 enlisted for Militia duty and brought their families to the security of Fort Royal or the Upper Fort on the Catawba River. That fort located on land from a “King’s grant” would soon be referred to as Davidson’s Fort and play a major role in North Carolina’s actions against Tory and Cherokee raids as far east as present day Spartenburg. Davidson’s Fort will also supply troops from its garrison to the pivotal battles of Kings Mountain, the Cowpens and Guilford Court House.
Join us as we rally to the cause.

Hiking with a Map + Compass at Highland Brewing Co.
A map and compass isn’t always top of mind when we’re used to navigating with an app, but it’s a skill every outdoor enthusiast should know. Diamond Brand Outdoors‘ and Frugal Backpacker‘s outdoor experts will teach the fundamentals in this class that’s great for all skill levels.
We’re getting outside our stores with summer by hosting some outdoor skills classes on Highland Brewing Company‘s rooftop bar. What better place to be than surrounded by a 360-degree view of Western North Carolina? The Rooftop is a 21 and older space, so this class is limited to those age 21+. In case of bad weather, we’ll move to the Tasting Room.
Hiking with a Map + Compass is free and open to the public.
