Partial Solar Eclipse Viewing

The solar eclipse will be crossing over America this upcoming Monday, April 8th!

The Physics and Astronomy Department at UNCA and the Astronomy Club of Asheville are holding a viewing for the solar eclipse on UNC Asheville’s campus in Parking Lot 34 (where the weekly farmers market is held). Here in Asheville it will be a partial solar eclipse with a maximum of 87% coverage around 3pm.

We will have special eclipse glasses, telescopes, and fun Sun facts. So bring your sunscreen and some friends and have fun watching the eclipse with us!

20th Annual NC Gold Festival

May 31, 2024 2 pm – 9 pm
June 1, 2024 9 am – 6 pm

Join us in celebrating our state’s gold heritage at the 20th Annual NC Gold Festival located at The Lucky Strike south of Marion, NC. We will have a variety of vendors such as gold dealers, gold mining equipment dealers, gemstone themed vendors, hand crafters, non-profits, and more! This is going to be a fantastic celebration with multiple music groups, and a couple of new to the festival surprises that will be announced at a later date! Make plans to attend, you won’t regret it!

The festival will be held at 251 Lucky Strike Drive in Marion, NC.

Spring Concert

Join us for a spring concert from 11:15-12pm at MLC West, at St. George Church! Join BBAVL teachers as they perform an interactive concert for kids and families! Featuring a special guest who the Montessori Learning Community pre-school community knows very well! This event is part of a fundraiser, but it is open to the public and intended to be a community event for families, especially those with children between 0-6. All ticket reservations are sliding scale and sales will go towards trying to maintain the weekly program at Montessori Learning Community.

Asheville Community Square Dance

Jam starts at 6 pm. Food trucks 6-9 pm. Dance 7-10 pm.

The evening will start at 6 p.m. with an outdoor old-time jam and food truck. The dance starts at 7:00pm. Beginners and all ages welcome! Come dance, play, or just enjoy the fireside jam!

Dance Baby Parent & Baby Dance Class

Classes are every Tuesday from 10-10:45am

A dance class for parents and caregivers and their babies ages 0m-2 years. Baby wearing or holding encouraged. Have fun moving and grooving with your baby to today’s top hits, no baby music here. This class is for you to have fun, find joy through movement, and build community.

Kids Book Reading and Sing-along

Children’s authors Fred Small and Shannon Hitchcock will read—or sing!—their books for kids ages three and up, with special guest Deborah Silverstein.

Fred’s Everything Possible is a joyfully illustrated lullaby about love, acceptance, and following your heart. Shannon’s She Sang for the Mountains is a lyrical picture book biography of songwriter and activist Jean Ritchie-Singer.

The Asheville Art Museum invites you to visit for free on Saturday, April 6 between noon–5pm! Come celebrate our exhibition The New Salon: A Contemporary View with an afternoon of creativity and community engagement.

• Chalk Walk … Can you recall your dreams? Inspired by Pop-Surrealism works on view in The New Salon: A Contemporary View, join us on the Museum’s Plaza and unleash your imagination with chalk! Whether it’s fantastical creatures, surreal landscapes, or whimsical narratives, you’re invited to share your unique dreams with us.

• Makerspace: Nail Salon … Led by talented local nail artist Rachael Ghazarian step into the world of nail art and design your own set of press-on nails. Inspired by Kim Ha’s photograph Ladies and Lowrider on view in The New Salon exhibition, this drop-in activity invites participants to transform their nails into painted canvases. All ages and abilities are welcome (children must be accompanied by an adult).

• Film: Auto-Morphosis … What if you could morph your car into a mobile work of art and drive it down the road for all to see? What would it look like? What would the world think of you? Join us for a screening of the delightful documentary Automorphosis. This film explores the minds and hearts of an inspiring collection of eccentrics, visionaries, and just plain folks who have transformed their autos into artworks. On a humorous and touching journey, we learn that an art car has the power to change us, to alter our view of our increasingly homogeneous world.

• Live Music: DJ Lil Meow Meow … Enjoy an afternoon of live music on the Museum’s Plaza featuring DJ Lil Meow Meow. DJ Lil Meow Meow is an Asheville- based DJ and music curator with an affinity for infectious dance cuts.

• Psychic Medium & Tarot Readings … Drawing inspiration from This Darkness by Daniel Martin Diaz on view in The New Salon , join us for Tarot readings with Krysta Beth Heidman. Krysta will offer a variety of ways to break your blocks and bring you one step closer to achieving your highest purpose.

• Artist-Led Tour: Brian Mashburn … Join us for a tour of The New Salon: A Contemporary View with local artist Brian Mashburn to learn about his work and other works on view included in the exhibition. Brian’s work depicts urban and industrial landscapes close to the natural world.

3:00pm–3:30pm
• Express Tour: The New Salon … Discover new featured artworks and artists on view in The New Salon during this 30-minute Express Tour.

3:45pm–4:00pm
• Spotlight Talk: The New Salon … Learn more about an artist or two featured in The New Salon during these bite-sized conversations with our volunteer educators.

Glass, Metal, & Clay Day

For over 20 years, the Asheville community has celebrated the oldest craft mediums on the Blue Ridge Parkway’s Folk Art Center with members of the Southern Highland Craft Guild. For the first time, the Guild will combine Glass & Metal Day with Clay Day this year to host Glass, Metal, and Clay Day! Showcasing the elements, Guild members will demonstrate a range of techniques, and have hands-on activities for children and adults.

Demonstrations include:
blacksmithing, glass blowing, piercing and soldering metals, knife making, bezeling, repoussé, copper etching, assembling stained glass, forging, wheel-thrown and hand-built ceramics, and surface design on clay, among other techniques.

While at the Folk Art Center, visitors have the opportunity to visit America’s oldest craft shop Allanstand (est. 1893), the Eastern National bookstore and Blue Ridge Parkway information desk, as well as three exhibition galleries, and a craft library.
Outside the Folk Art Center, there are hiking trails, picnic tables, grassy areas for a picnic, and free parking.

Bring the whole family and enjoy a day to remember!
