Land of Sky Symphonic Band – Halloween Spooktacular!
Thur 10/31 7:30pm Doors open at 7pm
Ticket holders are encouraged to wear creative costumes to the show in the spirit of Halloween. There will be prizes awarded for the most original costumes.
Land of the Sky Symphonic Band, a 43-piece community band comprised of professional and amateur musicians of all walks of life who live in Buncombe, Henderson and McDowell counties, will stage a Halloween Spooktacular at White Horse Black Mountain on Thursday, Oct. 31 at 7:30 p.m.
The band, under the musical direction of Dr. David Wilken, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and a North Carolina Arts Council, Grassroots Arts Program grant recipient. Group members rehearse weekly in Asheville.
Dr.Wilken is a graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University who earned his Master of Music in Jazz Studies from DePaul University and the Doctor of Arts in Trombone Performance from Ball State University. He has served as assistant professor of jazz and brass at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo. and assistant professor/coordinator of jazz studies at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. He is currently an instructor of music at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C. Dr. Wilken serves as music director and lead trombone of the Asheville Jazz Orchestra.

Oct 13th 1:00pm-4:00pm – Fall Tree Giveaway to Buncombe County residents at Buncombe County Sports Park with Asheville GreenWorks, Duke Energy, and Buncombe County Government. “Join Asheville GreenWorks and Duke Energy in growing our urban canopy at the Fall Tree Giveaway. We will be giving away Oaks, Sycamores, Red Maples, Black gums, River Birches, Persimmons, Hickorys, or Sourwoods. One tree per Buncombe County household with either a valid ID or a recent bill for address verification. To receive a free tree, you will need to go through a short on-site training on how to plant and take care of your tree. This training is provided by certified arborists and is required for all attendees.”

Family Hike with Fit4Mom
Getting outside feeds the body, mind, and soul. Join Fit4Mom Asheville in exploring 8 amazing easy to moderate hikes, all under 3 miles over the course of 8 weeks. Come to one or come to all and rediscover what so many love most about southern Appalachia.
Not to mention, being outside in the forest has numerous benefits to both you and your children. A simple hike can reduce stress, increase one’s attention span, improve sensory skills and aid cognitive development.

Each Saturday, we will meet at the trailhead at 10:00 AM. If you are interested in carpooling or convoying, let us know.

Fall Festival (CANCELLED)
THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED, however they will still be open 11am-6pm, and invite you to stop by and grab a pumpkin!
Rooster Head Plantation and Pisgah Collective are hosting their second annual Fall Festival. Come out to this free (entry) community event at 1200 Old Hendersonville Hwy. Take the bike path and enjoy the day. There will be lawn games, hay rides, food vendors, live demos, live music, face painting, fall photo booth, and lots more!

Appalachian Christmas

Two and three-night packages are available and include lodging, meals and tickets to all performances. Individual concert tickets are also available for purchase – $18 general admission, $23 reserved seating, plus tax.

Thursday, December 12:
7:30 p.m. – “Rediscover Christmas” by Acts of Renewal
Enjoy a fresh perspective on Christmas through this funny and moving dramatic show that has captivated audiences across the country. Enjoy a series of vignettes beginning with a comedic tale of two blue collar shepherds who are in the right place at the right time on Christmas eve, followed by a moving rendition of the Annunciation, a tender funny story about ice fishing, a hilarious look at dealing with in-laws at Christmas, and a true story of an Appalachian single mom in need of a Christmas miracle. For the finale, you’ll hear the Christmas story like you’ve never heard it before! Entrance to this event is included only when you purchase the Appalachian Christmas package – no additional tickets will be sold.
Friday, December 13:
7:30 p.m. – Handel’s “Messiah”
A group of regional choristers, orchestra and the Lake Junaluska Singers will sing selections from Handel’s “Messiah” which tells of Christ’s birth. “Messiah” is a baroque-era music composition for orchestra, choir and soloists composed by George Frideric Handel from 1741-42. Notable musical selections include the Hallelujah Chorus, For Unto Us A Child Born, and Glory to God.
Saturday, December 14:
9 a.m.-4 p.m. – Appalachian Christmas Craft Show
The Appalachian Christmas craft show brings together vendors from across the Appalachian region to sell their unique and beautiful crafts. The show is hosted by the Junaluska Woman’s Club and all profits go toward charitable organizations. The show is open to the public.
2 p.m. – Summer Brooke & Mountain Faith Band
Since the year 2000, the Mountain Faith Band has performed their unique brand of Americana / Roots music to audiences from coast to coast. During Appalachian Christmas, Summer Brooke & Mountain Faith Band will perform songs from their popular Christmas album “The Sounds of Christmas.” Getting to know MFB is easy; their humility, kindness and love of community shines through on stage and casual conversation. Above all else, MFB is thankful for the opportunities God has provided them through music.
7:30 p.m. – Lake Junlauska Singers Christmas Concert
This 16-voice, award-winning ensemble was formed in 1954, and their legacy includes national and international performances for conferences, dignitaries and major events. Their music ranges from classical choral and contemporary works to gospel, folk, traditional hymns and musical theatre. During Appalachian Christmas, the Lake Junaluska Singers will focus on festive songs new and old that celebrate the joy of the season.
Sunday, December 15:
9:30 a.m. – Appalachian Christmas Worship Service
Conclude your Appalachian Christmas with a stirring Advent worship service in our beautiful and historic stone chapel on the edge of the lake.
