We’re doing a family friendly trick or treat on Halloween night at Serpentarium Magic in Mills River. Free admission for everyone. We’ll also have some snacks for while you’re there. Bring your kiddos by for some good, safe family fun. If you have teens or tweens that still want to participate, this would be great for them too! They can come see the awesome selection of reptiles on display. Stay a while or just stop in to say hey.

MASTERWORKS 2: Horror at the Symphony: Fright Night (Clyne, Daugherty, Mussorgsky, Berlioz)
Berlioz’s grand Symphonie Fantastique headlines this ghoulish concert. Inspired by an opium trip, it remains one of the most original and unusual symphonies in the standard repertoire. The first half offers three unusual counterparts: Anna Clyne’s Masquerade, a thrilling overture written by one of Classical music’s rising stars, Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain in it’s rare, more gritty and powerful original version and finally, Daughterty’s Dead Elvis — a performance piece for bassoon soloist complete with an Elvis jumpsuit!

First Friday | October
On Friday, October 4 from 5 – 8 pm the Asheville Area Arts Council will host an opening reception for three shows at the Refinery building at 207 Coxe Ave. All are welcome to attend this free event!
___
Street Creatures and Dancing Beasts
AAAC Main Gallery | October 4 – 25
This exhibit will showcase a range of forms and materials in puppetry from puppet makers around the Asheville area, depicting animals, both real and imagined. Bringing animals to life through puppetry has a long history. Animal characters are freer than human ones to comment upon authority figures. The stories they tell often bring myth and folklore to life.
A Little Something for Everyone, Especially the Artist
AAAC Front Gallery | October 4 – November 29
Refinery resident artist, Christine Longoria: ‘I don’t like artist statements, because they should always be changing daily too. I just want people to view my work, and see something they have never noticed before. I hope it will change the way they observe and see with new, enlightened eyes. Negative space? A new color way? I want them to know that art, like living, is a risk -taking business.”
Owen Middle School Student Exhibit
AAAC Hall Gallery | October 4 – November 29
The AAAC is excited to exhibit mixed media projects inspired by observations of nature created by the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders at Owen Middle School.
