National Train Day Celebration in Hendersonville @ Southern Railroad Depot

In honor of National Train Day, make plans now to attend Hendersonville’s Apple Valley Model Railroad Club celebration of this event on Saturday, May 11, 2019 with an open house and many activities. The Club is located in the Southern Railroad Depot, corner of 7th Avenue and Maple Street in Hendersonville and will be open from 9am to 4pm on May 11. The club will be selling pizza, drinks and desserts. There is no admission charge but donations are greatly appreciated

This will be a fun filled day for the entire family with many events, special guests (a real locomotive) and speakers to discuss railroading in North Carolina. There will be many trains running on both the inside and outside layouts. The N Scale club across the tracks will also be open this day.
The club features an indoor HO scale model railroad depicting towns in Western North Carolina and an outdoor G scale layout featuring lumber and gravel operations in the early 1900s that occurred in Western North Carolina. The club has Thomas and Emily trains for young children to operate and features an interactive display of railroad memorabilia.

There is an ongoing model railroad under construction project visitors can view as well as an interactive 110 year old large scale steam locomotive. Other features and activities include:
A Blue Ridge Southern railroad locomotive and 2 man crew on location
Video cameras in our model trains show the engineer’s view on a closed circuit TV
– A switching layout to challenge your skills
– An operating interactive Morse code telegraph system
– Go on a scavenger hunt for items on our model railroads
– Videos of rail operations including a video of the 611 on the Saluda grade playing on our screen
– Visitors can also tour our real caboose.

The Sandburg goats will be in a petting area along with Sandburg Home representatives to answer questions about the goats and the home.
Speakers will be giving short talks about local railroad history throughout the day. Topics include:
1 History of the Saluda grade
2 Wrecks that occurred on the Saluda grade
3 The railroad that runs in Hendersonville now
4 History of our depot & our club
5 Introduction to the Craggy Mountain Railroad in Asheville
