Join us on this exclusive historic driving tour of the east side of the Burnett Reservoir to explore part of the once thriving North Fork Valley community. The trip stops at Sunalee Lodge, then to the home place of Champ Burnett. From there, we will drive to Colonel John Connally’s home site which has extensive ruins including two standing chimneys. The caravan will make a stop to include a short 5 -10 minute walk from the vehicles to the home sites of Will and Bart Burnett and the slave cemetery. A final stop will be made at the Right Hand Fork Intake.

Join us on this exclusive historic driving tour of the west side of the Burnett Reservoir to explore part of the once thriving North Fork Valley community. We will begin with a talk overlooking the valley from the old clubhouse and then cross the main dam. From here, the caravan will stop for participants to view the entrance to Gombroon as well as the Gombroon wall. Following that, we will pass the Left Hand Fork Intake and head to the Dan Burnett Place. The tour will end with the ruins of Gombroon – to include the foundation, heart-shaped pool, the spring house, and the McGinnis Cabin.

Difficulty: Moderate; There will be some walking on rough terrain. Wear sturdy hiking boots and dress for the weather. This is a rain or shine event.
Cost: $50 for members, $75 for nonmembers, $25 for children under 12
Note: This tour takes place inside the City of Asheville watershed and is limited to only 30 participants for each tour to protect this special place.
