A biweekly art intensive in which teenage artists study, discuss and practice community art. Throughout four weeks together, participants will study the history of socially engaged art, formulate individual artistic voices and collaborate on transformative community art projects in the city of Asheville. All materials included.
WEEK 2: JULY 17-21
evening MAKING LAB: Who Am I? Finding Your Voice Through Digital Storytelling
Rising grades 6-9

Digital stories are short first person narrative movies that use images, voice and music to tell a compelling personal story. Digital stories are a great way for people of all ages to reflect upon and make meaning of their life experiences. Art-o-biographical in nature, the act of making a digital story encourages self-understanding and creativity, while deepening writing, photography, technology, and media literacy skills. In this Making Lab participants will be guided through the steps of the digital storytelling process to create their own 2-3 minute autobiographical digital story, using their mobile devices. We will learn about the underlying philosophy of the digital storytelling movement as well as script writing, audio recording, iphoneography, visual storytelling, video editing and production. The lab will culminate in a group screening of our digital stories.
Supplies: Each participant will need to bring a mobile device capable of taking photographs and video. (Iphone, Ipad, Ipod touch, Android phones etc…) Students will also need to purchase and download a mobile editing app- TBA (average cost between $5-$10)
WEEK 3: AUGUST 7-11
evening MAKING LAB: Strong Girls

Girls will use dance, movement, writing and collaging as a lens for discussion around positive self image, female strength and empowerment. Led by the amazing Lisa Zahiya!
